API 20E (BSL 1, 2 & 3)
Description of Material
Description of Material
The American Petroleum Institute (API) develops operational standards for equipment & hardware used in petroleum, natural gas and petrochemical applications with the aim of enhancing operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
API 20E refers to high-strength alloy steel bolts, studs, and nuts manufactured to meet the American Petroleum Institution (API) 20E specification, specifically designed for oil and gas industry applications, where equipment is exposed to high pressure, high stress, and potentially corrosive environments.
There are 3 bolting specification levels (BSL1, 2 & 3) and the criticalness of the fastener increases with the BSL number and therefore, so does the stringency and volume of the testing and inspection requirements.
The following Bolting Material grades are covered by this standard:
- ASTM A193 Grades B7/B7M
- ASTM A194 Grades 2H/2HM, 7/7M
- ASTM A320 Grades L7/L7M, L43
- ASTM A540 Grade B23
All products shall meet the requirements of the referenced ASTM specification and the modifications specified by the API 20E standard and the relevant bolting specification level.
