| The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has entered into a significant 15-year Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA) with Germany’s EnBW (Energie Baden-Württemberg AG) for the Ruwais liquefied natural gas (LNG) project. This agreement, which will supply 0.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, underscores ADNOC’s commitment to expanding its global LNG operations and addressing the growing global energy demand. The Ruwais LNG project, currently under development at Al Ruwais Industrial City in Abu Dhabi, is set to become the first LNG export facility in the Middle East and Africa to operate entirely on clean power. The project’s low-carbon approach integrates advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and digitalisation, to enhance efficiency and safety across its operations. With two liquefaction trains, the facility will boast a total export capacity of 9.6 mtpa, more than doubling ADNOC’s current LNG output. Once operational, the Ruwais LNG facility will produce enough LNG to power every home in London for over two years. ADNOC has already secured long-term agreements with international customers for more than 8 mtpa of the plant’s 9.6 mtpa capacity, highlighting the strong demand for this project. The deal with EnBW marks ADNOC’s second SPA with a German company, following a similar 15-year 1 mtpa agreement signed with SEFE Marketing and Trading Singapore Pte in November 2024. This partnership not only strengthens ADNOC’s presence in Europe but also contributes to global decarbonisation efforts by supplying lower-carbon LNG to EnBW. As one of the first major deals under ADNOC’s expanded LNG export strategy, this SPA positions ADNOC as a key player in the global LNG market. The agreement also underscores the UAE’s robust energy diplomacy, aligning closely with the country’s energy diversification objectives. |
